Northeast California Braces for 102° Heat Today with Isolated Thunderstorms Possible Before Midweek Cooldown

Reno, NV – Scorching triple-digit heat is set to impact much of western Nevada and northeast California today, with temperatures topping 103 degrees in some areas before a cooler weather pattern arrives midweek. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms—mainly along the Sierra and Sierra Front—could bring brief gusty winds and lightning.

Heat Wave Peaking Before Shift to Cooler Weather

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, storm chances today range from 15% to 30% west of U.S. 95 in western Nevada and south of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Valleys. Northeast California faces a smaller 10% to 15% risk, but any storms that develop could spark wildfires in the region’s dry grasslands.

Highs are expected to reach 98 to 103 degrees in western Nevada, 86 to 93 in the Sierra Valleys, and 94 to 102 in northeast California. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s in higher elevations to the low 70s in valley floors. Residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion.

Thunderstorm Threat Until Tonight

Forecasters warn that even a small chance of thunderstorms could have serious fire implications due to extremely dry fuels. Lightning strikes in the backcountry may lead to delayed fire ignitions, making fire weather conditions particularly hazardous.

Most of today’s thunderstorm activity will be confined to the Sierra and Sierra Front, with activity tapering off by late evening. Gusty outflow winds of up to 40 mph are possible near storm cells.

Cooler Midweek Pattern Arrives

Relief is expected starting Wednesday, with highs dropping by at least 10 degrees compared to today. The cooldown will continue into the weekend, accompanied by another chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Five-Day Forecast for Reno, NV

  • Wednesday: High 91, Low 60 – Mostly sunny
