KTVT, PLANO, Texas According to Plano police, a 49-year-old Richardson lady has been taken into custody in connection with a well-publicized hit-and-run incident involving a kid on December 10. A video that surfaced on social media brought attention to the incident.

After being taken into custody at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Zulma Beltran is now charged with a felony of collision involving personal injury. According to police, she is still being detained at Plano City Jail.

At Wilson Drive and Westridge Drive, her SUV was shown on camera colliding with a 12-year-old child who was crossing the roadway.

Beltran had previously apologized to authorities for leaving the scene of the accident. According to police, crowdsourcing footage were used to collect vital information that helped identify the driver.

A young girl is struck by a car as she crosses the street in the home security footage. After a brief pause, the driver continues driving.

After the accident’s footage was shared on social media, Plano families and parents voiced their concerns.

Shortly after the event, Sherry Barker told CBS News Texas, “It was terrible, and she was just screaming.” Barker resides across the street from the scene of the crime.

Barker claimed that the young girl was struck as she was ready to cross the street and get upon the curb.

“I’m shocked and worried,” said Barker, whose two grandkids frequently stroll through the area on their way to and from school.

Really, it’s just a terrible feeling from what transpired. In reference to the motorist, Barker stated, “She not only backed up to pull off, but she sped off.”

Although she claimed to have heard the youngster yelling, the neighbor who captured the hit-and-run on camera pointed out that the girl was able to leave and go to school.

According to the girl’s older brother, his sister has several bruises and scrapes. He added that although his sister refused to go to the hospital, the family filed a police report, saying she was mainly simply rattled up.

The incident should serve as a lesson to cars to slow down and keep an eye out for children and pedestrians, especially during school hours, according to the neighbors.

Plano police praised the community in their news release on Thursday for helping to identify the car and the suspect, which will ensure that justice is done and our streets stay safe.

The Traffic Unit of the Plano Police Department is still investigating.
