Bismarck, ND – Drivers in western and south central North Dakota encountered dense fog Monday morning, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less along major highways. The hazardous conditions have prompted warnings from the National Weather Service in Bismarck for motorists to exercise caution through mid to late morning.
Areas Impacted by Fog
The fog is affecting communities including Watford City, Dickinson, Mandan, Bismarck, Bowman, and Fort Yates. Officials highlighted that intersections, railroad crossings, and stretches of major highways are especially prone to sudden drops in visibility.
“Motorists should slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and leave extra distance between vehicles,” the National Weather Service advised.
The heaviest fog was reported along Interstate 94 near Dickinson and Bismarck, as well as U.S. Highway 85 around Watford City and Bowman. Smaller towns, including Elgin, Hazen, and Killdeer, may also experience patchy but dense fog, particularly along county roads.
Safety Tips for Commuters
School buses, delivery drivers, and morning commuters are urged to allow extra travel time. Residents are reminded that fog can reduce visibility rapidly and make it difficult to judge distances or see vehicles ahead.
“Even familiar roads can become dangerous in heavy fog,” said a local highway patrol officer. “It’s important to drive cautiously and avoid distractions.”
Motorists are encouraged to keep headlights on low beam rather than high beam, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance.
When Conditions Will Improve
The fog is expected to lift by late morning as temperatures rise. However, conditions may remain variable in some areas until then. By the afternoon, more seasonal weather with clear skies and improved visibility is expected to return to most affected regions.
