North Carolina Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Flash Flooding, and 105°F Heat Indices Threaten Eastern NC Through Saturday

NORTH CAROLINA– The National Weather Service has issued an urgent Weather Alert for Eastern North Carolina, warning of a dual threat of flash flooding and extreme heat through Saturday evening. Residents in low-lying and coastal regions should brace for dangerous rainfall and oppressive humidity, with heat index values nearing 105°F.

The region will face torrential downpours, already leading to urban flooding and saturated grounds in parts of Greenville, New Bern, and Jacksonville.

Multiple Hazards: Rain and Dangerous Heat

Forecasters say the overlapping risks of heavy rainfall and intense heat could overwhelm both infrastructure and public health systems. Several inches of rain are expected, with localized flash flooding already reported near rivers and drainage basins.

“It’s an especially dangerous combination—floodwaters can mask downed power lines or debris, and heat index values over 100°F strain emergency services,”
said a National Weather Service.

The situation is fluid, with heat and flood advisories updated hourly as the storm system lingers.

Impacted Areas and Timing

  • Friday through Saturday evening: Persistent storms, afternoon heat spikes
  • Greenville & New Bern: Most likely to experience compound flooding
  • Jacksonville & Outer Banks: Heat indices over 105°F likely with high humidity

Storm drains may back up quickly, and power outages are possible due to lightning and saturated soil conditions.

Safety Guidance for Residents

Authorities urge locals to:

  • Stay indoors during peak heat hours (12–4 p.m.)
  • Avoid driving through flooded roadways
  • Hydrate frequently and check on elderly neighbors
  • Follow alerts from local emergency management

Outdoor events may face last-minute cancellations or delays, and coastal travel is discouraged during high tide periods.
