Police in North Carolina say they arrested a man after finding an old woman who was hurt living with more than 40 wild wolf-hybrid dogs in a house that was “uninhabitable” for people or animals.
It was announced in a press statement that Melvin “Sonny” Berry was arrested on Monday on one count of felony domestic elder abuse or neglect with serious injuries, one misdemeanor local ordinance charge, and 20 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.
Earlier this month, police in the Denton area started looking into reports of possible abuse of animals and older people.
Through questions, observations, and medical exams, deputies learned that an elderly woman was living in a home with more than 40 wolf-hybrid dogs. The woman had been hurt, which led to a welfare check at the home.
According to the deputies, both the inside and outside of the house were “uninhabitable” for people and dogs.
The dogs weren’t friendly, and it was later found that they were wild. The dogs were finally put down after talking to doctors and veterinarians several times. This was done “to protect public safety as well as the safety of surrounding pets in the area, due to the diseases that these dogs were exposed to and carrying,” the sheriff’s office said.
Berry is due to go to Lexington District Court on July 23 after being arrested last week.
