Orangeburg County, SC – A routine noise complaint on Monday evening turned into a major felony case after deputies uncovered drugs, weapons and magazines at a home on Baugh Street. Two men are now facing multiple charges following what the sheriff described as an unexpected discovery.
Incident Overview
Deputies with the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area just before 7 p.m. after a resident reported loud noise. Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said that narcotics were never part of the original call and that the response was purely to address the disturbance.
“We didn’t go out there with illegal narcotics in mind,” Ravenell said. “We went to this location because someone complained about noise.”
When deputies arrived, they immediately noticed weapons and what appeared to be marijuana inside a vehicle. That observation prompted a search of the vehicle and a connected apartment.
What Investigators Found
The investigation quickly escalated. Deputies reported finding more than 280 grams of marijuana, equal to nearly 10 ounces, along with three firearms and several magazines. The items were seized from both the vehicle and the associated apartment.
According to officials, one suspect attempted to escape through a hole in the apartment ceiling. Sheriff Ravenell said the deputies’ response turned it into “probably one of the briefest foot chases on record.”
Charges Filed Against Both Suspects
Two men are now facing a long list of charges tied to the seizure:
Tyshon Jefferson, 24, was charged with:
- Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession with intent to distribute near a school
- Three counts of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon
Tamir Shivers, 25, was charged with:
- Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession with intent to distribute near a school
Deputies said Jefferson was taken into custody without incident, while Shivers attempted the failed ceiling escape. Both were scheduled to appear in bond court on Tuesday afternoon.
Community Awareness and Context
Noise complaints are common calls for deputies, but officials said this incident showed how quickly routine situations can shift into larger public safety concerns. The sheriff’s office emphasized that illegal weapons and drug activity often remain hidden until a separate disturbance brings deputies to the scene.
Marijuana laws in South Carolina remain strict. Possession with intent to distribute—especially near a school zone—can lead to enhanced penalties, including substantial fines and prison time. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon carries additional mandatory consequences.
What Happens Next
The sheriff’s office said the case will now move through the court system, with additional investigative steps possible depending on evidence recovered from the scene. Both suspects remain under multiple felony charges, and bond decisions were expected following their court appearance.
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting disturbances or suspicious activity to local authorities, as even minor calls can help uncover more serious issues in a neighborhood.
