Ferrari is a symbol of power, speed, and roaring engines
. But now, they have taken a step towards fighting for a more sustainable future. For many, it has been a big disappointment that a brand of Ferrari’s level wants to focus its efforts on other types of alternative combustion to no longer rely on internal combustion engines. But of course, this decision is necessary to keep offering the same driving experience as always, only now reducing emissions to zero. Don’t worry, Ferrari isn’t the only one taking this path; many companies are looking for clean alternatives to stay in the race to dominate their sectors.
The challenge of hydrogen engines
As you have probably seen, hydrogen was presented as a magic spell for vehicles, the one an only solution to replace fossil fuels in this sector. But, several brands (Toyota and Hyundai, for example) have invested millions in the development of cars powered by this gas. However, its adoption hasn’t been as popular as expected, especially in luxury and sports cars.
Why? Well, because the infrastructure to produce and distribute green hydrogen (the one that doesn’t pollute) is VERY expensive. In fact, most of the hydrogen used today comes from fossil fuels, which limits its environmental advantages. Besides… the technology for hydrogen engines still hasn’t matched the efficiency and versatility of electric motors, and certainly not their power or their roar, which is crucial if you can afford a Ferrari.
Ferrari and hydrogen… possibility or fiction?
Hydrogen is an uncertain future… but it’s there and all car developers are trying to make electric hybrids.
Ferrari already tried its luck with the Ferrari F80, a vehicle that is the most powerful today… a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and three electric motors (one on the front axle and two on the rear) that together generate 1,184 horsepower…
And although they are getting ready to present their fully electric vehicle, the Elettrica, they haven’t ruled out that hydrogen vehicles could be a possibility (even if it’s very hard to carry out), well, they even have the patent already, and yes, it would be designed to run on hydrogen. Excited?
Advantages of these engines
A very clear one: they can be used in current engines, adapting to zero-emissions regulations without sacrificing performance.
Ferrari’s own CEO, Benedetto Vigna, confirmed that they are working with other partners to develop these fuels. “We believe there is a clear path for internal combustion engines to continue to exist, and this will be possible thanks to carbon-neutral fuels”.
Ferrari’s big bet is to have this fuel ready to test in the 2026 Formula 1 season…
A crazy idea? Maybe, b
ut this championship has already announced its intention to use a 100% sustainable fuel in the coming years, and Ferrari wants to be one of the leaders of this revolution, of course!
What are synthetic fuels?
They are fuels made from hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, absolutely free of petroleum. Their production process ensures that they do not generate polluting emissions, which is why they are in vogue, we have a planet to take care of, and we’re already late!
What are the advantages of synthetic fuels?
First of all. those fuels are not petroleum-derived which is an incredible good new, but are obtained from green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, and they only emit water! In this way, they would ensure that the wonderful F80 keeps roaring as always but without polluting even a little bit, yasss!
Ok but, what does this mean for Ferrari drivers?
For Ferrari enthusiasts, the news is a breath of hope. Keep calm, evenfull electrification is coming soon…, these fuels will allow them to continue enjoying the sound and thrill of traditional engines!
They’re not willing to give up their essence, the one they’ve always had, the one that makes people turn their heads when they hear the roar on the street. But there are other ways to keep the magic of their engines alive, and maybe this is the best one, don’t you think so?. Ferrari is synonymous with innovation and speed, and changing fuels won’t stop that, don’t you think? Roar? Yessss, but with environmental responsibility!
