BURLINGTON, NJ – Police have given an update on the death of a popular crossing guard in South Jersey who was walking kids across a street.
A white car hit 74-year-old Bruce Morlack at the corner of Jacksonville Road and James Street in Burlington on Friday morning.
No harm came to the children, but the crossing guard died soon after from his wounds.
A red car almost hit Morlack and both of the kids just seconds before. They were in a marked crossing. The red car drove away, but the white car stayed at the scene.
On Monday, cops said they found the driver by using surveillance footage to track down the red car.
Their name has not been made public yet, and no charges have been brought against them.
People in the neighborhood were shocked and saddened by the crossing guard’s death. They had known him for years.
“When I found out it was the crossing guard, I immediately just prayed for him, because he’s been our crossing guard for many years,” Dr. Claudia Maxie said. “We send him Christmas cards.” We always talk to him. He waves at everyone and plays the harp on the corner. He also picks up trash and keeps the area clean. We love him because he’s a great person.
