A 12-year-old boy died and an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling through ice in a park in Albany, New York, on Saturday.
Albany police were dispatched to Washington Square Park around 4:35 p.m. on reports that many juveniles had fallen through the ice near the park’s lake house.
Police said they found the girl and sent her to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where she is in critical condition.
A few hours later, the New York State Police underwater recovery team discovered the boy’s body.
Albany police suspect he fell through the ice while attempting to go toward the lake house. Police believe the girl attempted to help him but also fell through the ice.
Police have not disclosed their names due to their ages.
The Albany City School District confirmed that both youngsters attended North Albany Middle School.
“Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time,” Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in a statement. “This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community.”
