New Tariffs Force Mazda to Suspend CX-50 Production in Alabama — Canadian Exports Hit

A major automaker will suspend manufacturing in the United States beginning May 12 owing to increased tariffs, causing widespread upheaval in the auto sector.

With automaker Mazda announcing that it will stop producing CX-50 automobiles headed for Canada due to American tariffs and related Canadian countermeasures, the effects of Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff policies are starting to be felt.

According to Mazda, the stoppage will start on May 12 at its plant in Huntsville, Alabama, which produces the CX-50 automobile for the North American market. The duration of the ban was not disclosed by the company. According to Sandra Lemaitre, a spokesperson for Mazda Canada, dealers across the country will continue to sell their remaining inventory until every unit is sold.

Mazda has announced that CX-50 production will be halted in Alabama due to new tariffs

Mazda emphasized that there will be no adjustments to the overall manufacturing volume since MTM (Mazda Toyota Manufacturing) will continue to produce the Mazda CX-50 for the North American market. As the only Mazda vehicle assembly plant in the United States, we hope to make the most of MTM to support the expansion of our company. We’ll keep an eye on the circumstances, including government negotiations, market trends, and policy developments, and we’ll think about adaptable and sensible solutions as needed. The CX-50 will no longer be produced for the Canadian market as of May 12 (U.S. time).

Keep in mind that MTM’s activities are unaffected, though, by the increase in manufacturing for the American market. Moreover, Mazda may decide to remove the CX-50 from the market entirely or increase the model’s price in Canada to cover additional expenses if the U.S. government’s tariff policy remains unchanged. For the foreseeable future, Canadian purchasers who are interested in a CX-50 will need to act quickly because the dealers’ current inventory is all that will be available.

A new Mazda is coming to the United States, and it will surprise people

The Mazda Miata is a popular choice for driving pleasure, but the Rocketeer MXV6 is a British restomod that offers six-cylinder analog bliss.

This unhinged British restomod swaps carbs and turbo lag for a more enjoyable six-cylinder experience, and it’s finally crossing the Atlantic. These Miata mutants, which have the stealth of MI6 and the swagger of Bond in a tweed driving cap, have been privately produced in the UK by Rocketeer Cars since 2013. We’ve only seen roughly 150 do-it-yourself kits and 30 complete projects thus far, as this isn’t your normal bolt-on circus with wings and exhaust. Hand-built, V6-swapped Miata craziness with a dash of classic sophistication. Additionally, they are now aiming for the U.S. market due to new funding from some unidentified but wealthy gearheads.

For those of you who are new to restomods, Rocketeer is to the Miata what Singer is to the Porsche 911: a boutique builder who takes a well-liked base and turns it into something far more unique, faster, and unusual. The MXV6’s core engine is a redesigned 3.0-liter Jaguar AJ30 V6, which is tuned to produce 280 horsepower in base form. When it departed Hiroshima, that was more than twice as much as an early NA Miata had. The British rework everything to maintain the weight balance close to the revered 50/50, so don’t worry.

The rally car is a track-oriented, nimble, and quick vehicle that outperforms other cars in terms of speed and noise. However, it goes beyond the simple swap.

The Keiryō edition from Rocketeer, which is Japanese for “lightweight,” eliminates the extraneous parts and weighs just 1,874 pounds while producing 375 horsepower. With 441 horsepower per ton, it is comparable to a McLaren 620R or Ferrari F40 in terms of power-to-weight. Consider that a Miata without stability nannies to save you but with supercar specs.
