New Jersey Flash Flood Warning: Life-Threatening Rainfall Hits Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic Until 5:30 p.m. Thursday

NEW JERSEY– A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for parts of northern New Jersey, with the National Weather Service warning of life-threatening rainfall affecting Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties through 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The region is experiencing rapid rainfall rates, overwhelming storm drains and leading to dangerous flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas.

Heavy Rainfall and Urban Flooding Threatens Safety

Weather officials report rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, with some areas already experiencing significant water accumulation on roads and residential zones. The storm system, moving slowly over the tri-county area, continues to drop intense rainfall in short bursts.

“Turn around, don’t drown — even six inches of moving water can be deadly,”
the National Weather Service cautioned in a statement.

Flash flooding remains especially dangerous at night, when visibility is lower and it’s harder to detect water-covered roadways.

Counties Under Immediate Alert

  • Bergen County: Widespread street flooding, poor visibility
  • Essex County: Flash flooding near rivers and urban centers
  • Hudson County: Major impacts expected on low-elevation neighborhoods
  • Passaic County: Road closures and stranded vehicles already reported

Emergency crews are on standby, responding to water rescues and redirecting traffic away from flood-prone zones.

Public Safety Instructions and Impact on Commuters

Residents in impacted areas should:

  • Avoid all unnecessary travel during the warning
  • Never drive through flooded roads
  • Monitor weather alerts and have emergency kits ready

The flooding is expected to severely disrupt afternoon and evening commutes, especially near major highways and transit hubs in and around Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson.
