New England and Upstate New York Face First Freeze Warning of the 2025 Fall Season

Caribou, ME – Northern New England and upstate New York are under their first freeze warning of the 2025 fall season, as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing early Saturday morning. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect plants, pets, and outdoor water sources.

Freeze Warnings Across Maine, Vermont, and Upstate New York

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that overnight lows from late Friday into Saturday morning will fall into the upper 20s and low 30s across the northern tier. Freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect for portions of Maine, Vermont, and upstate New York.

  • Maine: NWS Caribou forecasts clear, cold conditions, with freezes likely across northwest Maine and frost expected in many valleys. Lows will range from near freezing in the north to the low 40s along the coast. Another freeze is expected Saturday night.
  • Vermont: Elevated areas will experience sub-freezing temperatures overnight, prompting frost advisories.
  • Upstate New York: NWS Albany issued a freeze warning for Hamilton County and frost advisories for northern Herkimer and Warren counties from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. NWS Binghamton forecasts temperatures in the mid-30s for central New York, while NWS Buffalo notes frost advisories for Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Safety and Precautions

Officials recommend residents take the following steps to protect themselves, pets, and property:

  • Cover or bring in late-season gardens and outdoor plants
  • Secure outdoor water sources and pipes
  • Keep pets indoors or provide adequate protection from the cold

Calm skies and light winds will allow rapid radiational cooling, increasing the likelihood of frost and freeze conditions overnight.

Daytime Temperatures and Weekend Outlook

Daytime highs on Saturday will remain in the 60s, with sunshine returning on Sunday and slightly warmer temperatures expected. Forecasters caution that cold nights will continue through the weekend, so residents should continue precautions for frost-sensitive areas.
