A lady and her infant child were hit by a car on Monday morning in southeast Portland. The collision occurred shortly before 7 a.m. at the intersection of southeast Division and 164th Avenue.
“Both the mom and child are at the hospital with serious injuries, but are not believed to be life-threatening,” Sergeant Kevin Allen informed the media.
Joey, the first person on the site, told KATU News that he witnessed the incident at 6:50 a.m. as he prepared to go out with his mother, brother, and one-year-old child.
“Suddenly, as I was about to click my baby, my eye saw the hit in my peripheral. Joey claimed, “It was a big boom and then there was no noise, nothing, or screaming.”
Joey advised his family to “hold on” as he hurried to check on the pedestrian and make sure the driver of the automobile did not flee the scene. “When I ran over, I observed the driver was an elderly lady. It was dark; regrettably, the lady [pedestrian] was dressed in dark clothing, you know…” He mentioned that the stroller was also dark in hue.
He claimed he observed the infant being “tossed far.” He contacted 911 and went to check on the mom and her baby, but they were separated by a long distance. He explained that he had to alternate between the mother and the infant.
Joey checked the stroller and found the youngster “barely breathing” and unresponsive. He attempted to lift the stroller away from the infant, who had been twisted inward owing to the accident, until the baby could breathe better.
Joey believes the person was going to a clinic across the street, which is frequently a source of concern. “We do not believe a clinic should be located on a busy route. People hoping to get clean are attempting to cross and get ahead of traffic.”
“It really sucks.”
He called out for his family, and someone from the clinic came out to assist.
“Unfortunately, what happens frequently in this neighborhood is that this clinic is quite risky. “It opens early, and people cross all the time,” Joey explained. “The crosswalk is at a bad part too.”
According to KATU News, the driver remained at the site and is working with investigators.
