Valentine Gomez, a Republican running for secretary of state in Missouri, called WNBA star Brittney Griner an “unpatriotic lesbian” and said she should be back in a Russian prison instead of playing in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Monday, Gomez said something in a 20-second video shared to X, which used to be Twitter.
She said, “Brittney Griner should be rotting in a Russian prison instead of going to the Olympics.” Gomez went on, “Caitlin Clark is the only reason we even watch women’s basketball.” “She should go to the Olympics, not this lesbian who doesn’t support our country.”
“The Olympics are about meritocracy, not DEI,” Gomez wrote under the picture.
The Associated Press reports that USA Basketball said Clark wasn’t on the U.S. women’s Olympic team because she didn’t have enough experience. The selection group thought Clark didn’t have enough high-level experience, even though she was very popular and skilled. Seven of the players on the team won gold in Tokyo, and Griner is one of them.
In the past, Gomez has said hurtful things about LGBTQ+ people and policies she sees as “weak and gay.”
In February 2022, Griner was arrested in Russia for having vape cartridges with cannabis oil in them. He was jailed for 10 months before being freed in a well-known prisoner swap. Griner was detained and had to deal with harsh conditions and homophobic behavior.
A lot of people are angry at Gomez for what she said on social media. Someone wrote, “Nobody should be ‘rotting in prison’ for marijuana,” and someone else said, “I like you, but no one should be rotting in prison over weed.”
In a campaign film released in May, Gomez told people, “In America, you can be anything you want, so don’t be weak and gay.” Do not stop fucking hard. In the video, she was seen running with a gun through a St. Louis area with a lot of LGBTQ+ people. She shared a video earlier this year of herself using a flamethrower to burn LGBTQ-themed books. In the video, she said, “If elected, I will BURN all books that are grooming, indoctrinating, and sexualizing our children.”
In her plan, she also talks about “defending children against the transgender agenda,” “defending the Second Amendment,” and “opposing vaccine mandates.” On August 6, Gomez’s primary election will take place. Voters will decide if her controversial campaign strategies will get her into the general election. Several Republicans are running for secretary of state, and she is one of them. Republican Jay Ashcroft, who is currently in office, is running for governor to replace fellow Republican Mike Parson, whose term is up.
