Minnesota Woman Accused of Hit-and-Run That Left 3-Year-Old With Brain Injury, Police Say

Minneapolis, Minnesota – A 32-year-old Minnesota woman is facing felony charges after police say she struck a 3-year-old child with her vehicle in an alley, left the scene, and later filed an insurance claim claiming she hit a “big rock” instead of a child.

What police say happened

According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County, Dollara Muktar Mohamed was driving a Kia Sorento on October 13 when she allegedly ran over a 3-year-old girl who was outside near her family’s driveway.

Investigators say the child was playing in the dirt near the alley when Mohamed’s vehicle struck her. Police allege Mohamed briefly exited the vehicle, then returned to the car and fled the scene without calling for help.

Emergency responders were called shortly afterward, and the child was rushed by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

Child suffered serious injuries

According to court documents, doctors diagnosed the child with multiple severe injuries, including:

  • Skull fracture
  • Brain bleed
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Severe abrasions to the face

Police say the injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Surveillance video details

Authorities obtained surveillance footage from nearby businesses that allegedly shows Mohamed driving away from the scene with two passengers inside the vehicle.

The complaint states that screaming and crying can be heard on the video as the vehicle leaves the area.

Moments later, Mohamed is seen driving to a nearby convenience store. Police say she and her passengers exited the vehicle in the parking lot and watched as an ambulance passed by, heading toward the crash scene.

Insurance claim raises red flags

In the days following the incident, investigators tracked the Kia Sorento to its registered owner, a relative of Mohamed.

Police allege that Mohamed and her family submitted an insurance claim to Nationwide Insurance, stating that she struck a “big rock” in the alley.

According to the complaint, Mohamed later gave a recorded statement to Nationwide in which she claimed she discovered a child crying over a toy but insisted she did not hit or injure her.

“She said she picked up the little girl and ‘dusted her off,’” the complaint states. Mohamed allegedly claimed the child was “autistic” and suggested the child’s mother was negligent for letting her play outside.

Statements to investigators

Before her arrest, an investigator contacted Mohamed by phone. Police say she confirmed she was driving the Kia but denied hitting a child.

When confronted with evidence, Mohamed allegedly claimed the child “was not 3 years old” and accused the child’s mother of neglect, according to the complaint.

Investigators say these statements conflicted with medical findings, witness accounts, and surveillance footage.

Charges and court status

Mohamed was arrested on December 12 and charged with:

  • Felony criminal vehicular operation
  • Failure to stop after an accident

Her bail was set at $75,000, and she remained in custody as of Monday. Her next court appearance is scheduled for January 13, 2026.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors review evidence, including surveillance footage, medical records, and recorded insurance statements.

Police have not released additional details about the child’s current condition but confirmed she remains under medical care.

Anyone with additional information related to the incident is encouraged to contact Minneapolis police.
