STRAIGHT RIVER TOWNSHIP, MN – A 44-year-old man, Charles Justus, has been arrested after allegedly breaking into his former neighbor’s home and stabbing him multiple times in front of his 5-year-old daughter, believing the victim had an affair with his wife. The victim, 49-year-old David Kerr, was critically injured in the attack.
Brutal Early-Morning Attack
According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 3:35 a.m. on October 4 to the Piney Park Mobile Home Community in Straight River Township after neighbors reported “an adult male and his 5-year-old daughter screaming for help.”
Upon arrival, officers found Kerr bleeding from the chest with 8 to 10 stab wounds. Neighbors confirmed the victim was seriously injured, and emergency personnel transported him to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Suspect Confesses to Attack
Investigators say Justus entered Kerr’s home through an unlocked door and began attacking him with fists and a knife, according to a probable cause affidavit. Kerr’s mother also identified Justus as the assailant.
Following the attack, Justus reportedly returned home and informed his wife, Danielle Westphal, about the stabbing. The couple then allegedly disposed of the suspect’s bloody clothing. Authorities later detained both Justus and Westphal for questioning.

- First-degree assault

During interviews, Justus admitted to stabbing Kerr multiple times and stated that he suspected Kerr had an affair with his wife while the couple were former neighbors. Westphal allegedly assisted in disposing of the bloody clothing and corroborated her husband’s account.
