Minnesota Air Quality Alert: Wildfire Smoke Keeps State in Red Through 5 PM Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect across Minnesota as wildfire smoke continues to blanket the region, pushing pollution levels into the “Red” (Unhealthy) category through 5 p.m. Saturday, according to officials.

As reported, the alert was issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), warning that wildfire smoke from fires burning across western Canada is drifting southeast and settling into the upper Midwest.

Health Risks Increase as Smoke Lingers

Air quality across northern, central, and southern Minnesota is currently rated as “Unhealthy for everyone,” especially for sensitive groups such as:

  • Children
  • Older adults
  • Individuals with heart or lung conditions
  • Outdoor workers and athletes

“People should limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors,”
said an MPCA spokesperson, adding that indoor air filtration and staying indoors whenever possible is highly advised.

How Long Will It Last?

The MPCA says the smoke is expected to linger through at least Saturday afternoon, with air quality potentially improving by evening depending on wind patterns.

Major cities impacted include:

  • Minneapolis–Saint Paul
  • Duluth
  • Rochester
  • Mankato
  • St. Cloud

Visibility may also be reduced due to smoke particulates in the air, affecting both air traffic and drivers on highways.

Tips for Staying Safe

Residents are urged to:

  • Keep windows and doors closed
  • Run air purifiers or use high-quality HVAC filters
  • Limit physical activity outdoors
  • Wear N95 masks if going outside is necessary
