Michigan Man Sentenced to Decades in Prison for Shooting Wife 15 Times After Receiving Divorce Papers

Grand Rapids, MI – A Michigan man who shot his wife 15 times the day after she served him with divorce papers has been sentenced to 25–50 years in prison, bringing closure to a case that rattled the local community.

Fatal Shooting Following Divorce Filing

On August 17, 2023, Marcus Lofton, 44, confronted his wife, Alicia Lofton, 38, at their home just one day after she filed for divorce. The couple had been married for only six months, but their relationship had been marked by conflict, including a domestic violence arrest in May 2023 that led to a no-contact order.

According to court records, Alicia was in the process of selling their shared home when Marcus came to collect his belongings. An argument erupted, and Marcus took Alicia’s Glock pistol from a drawer. Witnesses said she ran into a bathroom and locked the door, but Marcus forced it open. As she attempted to escape through a window, he opened fire, striking her multiple times.

Victim’s Father Delivers Emotional Statement

The sentencing hearing, covered by MLive.com, was emotional as family members addressed the court. Arthur Joseph, Alicia’s father, expressed deep anger toward Marcus, saying, “I just want the world to know that this guy is a piece of garbage. I wish I could handle this and serve justice on his a— right now.”

Judge Scott Noto handed down the 25–50 year sentence after Marcus pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. This plea deal came after a mistrial earlier this year when a jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. Marcus chose not to make a statement during sentencing.

Chilling Details of the Attack

Police said Alicia fled to the bathroom to escape, but Marcus broke in and continued his assault. After shooting her, he fled in his SUV, leaving her lifeless body on the lawn outside. Neighbors called 911 after hearing multiple gunshots.

The medical examiner found “numerous fatal gunshot wounds” on Alicia’s body. She was a mother of three grown children, remembered by loved ones as a caring and strong woman who was trying to rebuild her life.

Community Outrage and Calls for Justice Reform

The brutal nature of the killing has sparked conversations in Grand Rapids about domestic violence prevention and whether more could have been done to protect Alicia after the May arrest. Advocates say the case is a tragic reminder of the dangers many victims face when trying to leave abusive relationships.
