Michigan Man Arrested After Shooting Victim Who Tried to Help Ex-Girlfriend

Sumpter Township, MI – A 22-year-old man in Michigan was arrested over the weekend after allegedly shooting a man who came to assist his ex-girlfriend, authorities said. The incident reportedly began at a local movie theater and ended with gunfire at a home roughly 30 miles southwest of Detroit.

Incident Begins at Local Theater

According to the Sumpter Township Police Department, the situation began at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday at the Emagine Theater in the 39000 block of Ford Road in Canton Township, just under 20 miles from the shooting site.

Authorities said Dominic Michael McBride, 22, allegedly spotted his ex-girlfriend at the theater with another man. McBride reportedly began following the pair as they left the theater, leading to the confrontation later at a home in Sumpter Township.

Shooting Occurs at Reed Street Residence

Police reported that the suspect followed the couple roughly 18 miles to the 46000 block of Reed Street, where the victim, a 40-year-old man, intervened after being notified by the couple of the situation.

“The suspect followed the two approximately 18 miles to the residence on Reed Street, at which point the victim, whom the couple had called to notify him of what was occurring, exited the residence, telling the suspect to leave,” the police release states. “After a brief encounter, the suspect allegedly produced a handgun while seated in his vehicle and shot the victim, who was standing in his yard.”

The victim reportedly suffered two gunshot wounds: one to the left side of his upper chest and another that grazed his right cheek. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment by Huron Valley Ambulance personnel. Authorities have not released the victim’s name.

Suspect Taken into Custody

Following the shooting, McBride reportedly drove to a nearby area and waited for police. He was taken into custody without incident, and the handgun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered.

McBride was charged with:

  • Assault with intent to murder
  • Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder
  • Assault with a dangerous weapon

Court Proceedings

McBride appeared in court before Judge Teresa Arlaina Patton, who set his bond at $500,000. He is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Sept. 24, according to court records.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine additional details surrounding the confrontation and McBride’s movements leading up to the shooting.

Community Impact and Safety

The case has raised concerns in the area regarding public safety and the escalation of conflicts following personal disputes. Law enforcement officials are urging residents to report suspicious activity and to avoid confrontations whenever possible.

“Situations like this highlight the importance of contacting authorities rather than taking matters into your own hands,” a police spokesperson said.

Residents in Sumpter Township and surrounding communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any incidents involving threats or weapons.
