Pontiac, MI – A Michigan father accused of brutally beating his 9-year-old son and burning his 1-year-old with lit cigarettes has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, bringing new attention to one of Oakland County’s most disturbing child abuse cases of the year.
Authorities said the investigation began in June, when the older child escaped the family’s home in the 100 block of South Edith Street after his father allegedly left to go to the store. A nearby homeowner saw the frightened boy and immediately contacted police, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Overview of the Abuse Allegations
When deputies arrived, they found the child suffering from multiple visible injuries. Officials said he appeared terrified and exhausted, telling deputies he had been beaten because he fell asleep on the couch. The case quickly expanded when investigators discovered evidence of abuse involving the younger child as well.
Moore pleaded no contest to child abuse charges on Friday, meaning he acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him, though he does not formally admit guilt.
What Deputies Found at the Scene
Deputies reported the 9-year-old had severe abrasions around his right eye and neck, along with welts across his torso. The boy told them his father had beaten him repeatedly with a belt on his face, back, legs and buttocks. Deputies also said he described being struck with a broom handle before being choked until he lost consciousness.
During the attack, he recalled his father saying, “It’s gonna happen all night.”
He told investigators that the violence escalated further when the 1-year-old began crying from hunger. Moore allegedly became enraged and threw the baby into his crib, according to the sheriff’s office.
Abuse of the 1-Year-Old
Detectives soon discovered more troubling evidence involving the baby. Authorities said the child had healed cigarette burns on his back and legs. The injuries were consistent with deliberate placement of lit cigarettes on the toddler’s skin.
At the time, the 1-year-old’s mother was in jail, leaving the child in Moore’s care. Following Moore’s arrest, Child Protective Services took custody of the younger boy for his safety.
What Investigators Learned After the Arrest
Shortly after deputies detained Moore, he allegedly told a relative that he was simply “whooping” his son for stealing. But the medical findings and the children’s statements painted a far more violent pattern of abuse.
Paramedics transported the 9-year-old to a hospital for treatment. His mother, deputies noted, did not live at the home with Moore.
Court Status and Sentencing Date
Cedric Diequell-Stevens Moore, 38 at the time of the charges, now awaits sentencing following his no-contest plea. Court records show his sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 21, 2026.
The plea spares the children from testifying at trial, but officials say the case underscores the importance of immediate reporting in suspected child abuse situations.
Community and Safety Context
Child abuse experts emphasize that severe cases often escalate over time and can become life-threatening without outside intervention. Authorities urge neighbors, teachers and caregivers to report concerns promptly, noting that the 9-year-old’s escape and a homeowner’s quick call likely prevented further harm.
If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, contact your local police or child protective services immediately.
