Massachusetts Man Who Killed Pregnant Fiancee Now Accused of Murdering Roommate

Boston, MA – A Massachusetts man who previously served over 15 years in prison for killing his pregnant fiancee now faces murder charges after his roommate was found dead in Boston this July. Taylor Hurst, 42, is accused of beating 52-year-old Stephen Gomes to death, authorities said.

Alleged Murder of Roommate

Boston police responded to a death investigation on July 6 at 56 Patten Street and discovered Gomes’ body under a bed. Prosecutors reported the victim had “significant and multiple fractures” and other head trauma.

Earlier that day, Hurst allegedly fled a traffic stop in Gomes’ SUV after officers approached the vehicle for being illegally parked. Hurst reportedly admitted to a physical altercation with Gomes before the fatal injuries occurred.

Court Appearance and Medical Concerns

Hurst made his first appearance from a hospital bed, with his attorney citing concerns about his “ability to appreciate” the charges due to an unspecified medical condition. A probable cause hearing for the murder charge is scheduled for September 17, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Criminal History

Hurst had been released from prison in 2023 after serving roughly 15 years for the 2007 killing of his pregnant fiancee, Katherine MacDougall, in Worcester. At the time, MacDougall was strangled to death in their home, and Hurst later pleaded guilty to manslaughter following a request from the victim’s family for mercy.

During the original trial, MacDougall’s family expressed a nuanced perspective, saying:

“Yes, what Taylor did was horrible and inexcusable. But was it unforgivable? We all know what it means to need forgiveness and have chosen not to withhold such from anyone.”

Hurst was sentenced to 18 to 20 years in that case. He also reportedly faced probation for animal cruelty in 2023 for kicking a puppy while incarcerated.

Next Steps

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Gomes’ death and reviewing Hurst’s history for potential risk factors. The upcoming probable cause hearing will determine whether the murder charge will advance to trial.

Residents and neighbors expressed shock over the violent allegations, highlighting the pattern of criminal behavior that has persisted since Hurst’s release from prison.
