Rehoboth, MA – A Massachusetts man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing his pregnant girlfriend to death and burying her in a 5-foot grave on his property in Rehoboth, about 50 miles southwest of Boston. 22-year-old Gregory Groom faces charges of murder, assault and battery on a pregnant person, and witness intimidation in connection with the death of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro.
Missing Person Report Leads to Investigation
Groom initially called police on August 8, claiming Monteiro had been at his home two days prior, got into a verbal argument, and left. He told investigators she was typically active on social media but had not posted since leaving his home.
Monteiro’s sister reported receiving a disturbing text on August 6 stating, “he threw me on the ground and pulled my hair and strangled me. My phone is at 4% and if I die it was Greg.“
Pregnancy and Prior Warnings
Prosecutors noted that Monteiro was 11 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Police also learned about previous altercations between Groom and Monteiro, which raised concerns during the investigation.
Groom Admits to Stabbing and Burial
During a subsequent interview with investigators, Groom allegedly admitted to stabbing Monteiro twice in the neck and once in the chest, breaking the kitchen knife during the attack. He then spent hours digging a grave and ultimately buried her body in a 5-foot hole on his 25-acre property.
District Attorney Jason Mohan told the court, “Mr. Groom then paused… and drew a rudimentary map showing the shed on the property where he had committed the murder.”
Crime scene investigators discovered a pool of blood under a brush pile near a shed, along with freshly moved dirt that marked the location of Monteiro’s grave.
Family Seeks Support Amid Tragedy
Monteiro’s family initially created a GoFundMe to assist in the search for her. Following the discovery of her body, the fundraiser is now dedicated to her funeral expenses. The family wrote, “Thank you for all your help in spreading awareness and for all the support our family has received so far. This is closure and we are so thankful for everyone’s help in getting here.”
Court Proceedings and Jail Status
Groom is scheduled to appear in court on September 10 and is currently being held without bond. Authorities continue to prepare for the upcoming legal proceedings in this high-profile case.
