Baltimore, MD – Maryland residents are set to experience a hot, humid stretch this week, along with increasing chances of afternoon thunderstorms as the weekend approaches.
Heat and Humidity on the Rise
High pressure that has kept conditions calm will begin to drift offshore by Tuesday, allowing heat and humidity to surge. Monday’s highs reached the mid to upper 80s, but with dew points climbing 10 to 15 degrees since Sunday, it already felt like the low 90s in many areas. Overnight, temperatures will remain warm, generally in the upper 60s to low 70s, and patchy fog could develop in valleys.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, highs will climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, with some areas near the Chesapeake Bay feeling close to 100 degrees once humidity is factored in. Nights will stay muggy, especially along the I-95 corridor.
Storm Chances Build Midweek
According to the National Weather Service, storm chances will begin increasing Tuesday, first affecting western Maryland before becoming more widespread Wednesday. A slow-moving cold front will approach midweek, bringing the possibility of gusty winds and heavy downpours. While severe storms aren’t expected to be widespread, localized flooding risks may rise in areas with poor drainage.
Lingering Heat Through the End of the Week
The cold front is expected to stall nearby Thursday into Friday, keeping the hot, humid air in place and allowing daily storm chances to persist. Highs will remain in the mid 80s to low 90s, while nights stay uncomfortably warm.
Weekend Outlook
By the weekend, storm chances could ease slightly, but isolated pop-up storms remain possible, particularly near the Bay or in mountainous areas. Another weather front could arrive early next week, ushering in another round of unsettled conditions.
Staying Safe in the Heat
Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. For those sensitive to heat, such as young children and older adults, extra precautions should be taken.
