Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo loses no-hit bid in 8th inning at Yankee Stadium

NEW YORKS: Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right field to start the eighth inning Thursday night, ending Seattle Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo’s no-hit bid against the New York Yankees.

After Austin Wells’ sacrifice fly reduced Seattle’s advantage to 5-1, Woo was removed, and Ben Rice followed with another clean single to put runners at the corners.

On a 1-2 changeup, Chisholm singled through the right side. Near first base, he and Woo, who will be teammates on the American League All-Star team next week, gave each other back pats.

After walking Trent Grisham and Jasson Dominguez to start the game, Woo retired 20 consecutive batters. After the walks, Woo retired Chisholm on a double play and struck out Aaron Judge.

Woo earned a called third strike on Dom nguez to end the sixth at 84 pitches after three groundouts in the fifth, all on balls that hit at least 100 mph. Cody Bellinger flied out to center field to end the seventh inning at 92 pitches.

In a career-high 7 1/3 innings, the 25-year-old right-hander walked two and struck out five. A career-high 103 pitches were thrown by him.

Six no-hitters have been thrown by the Mariners. On May 8, 2018, James Paxton became the first Canadian-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter on Canadian territory in Toronto.

Eight times, New York has been no-hit. The last time it was accomplished was on June 25, 2022, at Yankee Stadium, when Cristian Javier of Houston joined forces with Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly.

Fernando Tatis Jr. smashed a home run in Seattle on September 11 of last year, costing Woo a perfect game against San Diego with one out in the seventh. He earned his first professional victory at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 2023, after pitching 5 1/3 hitless innings before giving up a single to Gleyber Torres.
