Man on Trial for 2016 Double-Murder of Shelby Toddler and Woman

SHELBY, NCMorris Abraham is on trial for his alleged role in the 2016 double-murder of three-year-old Liam Murray and Miranda Woods, a woman staying at the same home. Prosecutors claim Abraham, along with his brother and girlfriend, planned a drug theft that led to the fatal shootings at a Whisnant Street residence in Shelby.

Video Evidence Presented in Court

During Tuesday’s trial, prosecutors played one of the last videos of three-year-old Liam Murray, recorded hours before the fatal shooting. The Snapchat video shows the child wearing red shorts, playing with Abraham, while his girlfriend and co-defendant, Aubre Sucato, are visible in the background. Prosecutors said this footage illustrates the proximity and relationship of the suspects to the victims before the incident.

Alleged Plot and Shooting

According to authorities, Abraham and his accomplices hatched a plan to steal marijuana, which ultimately led to the deaths of the child and Woods. Police said the suspects left the house and returned with Abraham’s brother, Mario Wilson, who allegedly fired the fatal shots.

Investigators noted that the trio had used their phones to coordinate the theft, and Abraham was on the phone 20 minutes before the murders, according to interrogation footage.

Abraham’s Defense

Abraham took the stand in his own defense, asserting he was not involved in the killings.

“I had nothing to do with it,” he told the court.

He further explained that although he was not related by blood to Liam Murray, the child was like his nephew. “I would see him almost every day,” Abraham said. He also claimed that he had been high and intoxicated at the time and left the house, only returning after he learned about the shooting.

Abraham emphasized, “I would never do anything like that.”

Co-Defendants and Legal Status

  • Mario Wilson, Abraham’s brother, has already been convicted of murder and is currently appealing the conviction.
  • Aubre Sucato, Abraham’s girlfriend and co-defendant, testified against him, but her charges are still pending.

The trial is ongoing, with closing arguments scheduled for tomorrow, after which the jury will deliberate on Abraham’s fate.

Case Continues to Impact Community

Officers and local reporters covering the 2016 shooting have noted that the case still resonates nine years later, highlighting the lasting emotional impact on the Shelby community. Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the importance of justice for both Liam Murray and Miranda Woods.
