WASHINGTON (WJLA): On December 23, a building collapsed in Washington, D.C., trapping a 36-year-old man within, resulting in his death.
The collapse took place at a building site.
When the victim’s family found out Edgar Sifuentes was dead, the media conference with fire officials was put on hold.
D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly reported that the body was discovered near the rear of the structure.
According to Donnelly and Brian Hanlon, director of the Department of Buildings, the construction began around one month ago.
It was noted that the work being done was in preparation for the footing to be poured.
According to the two, they are still unsure of the cause of the fall.
“It was during their workday,” Donnelly continued. It’s a really significant collapse.
After learning about the fatal collapse, Sifuentes’ sister-in-law, Cinthya Alvarez, requested answers from local officials.
I’m angry because I don’t understand how the city granted permission to build this without first doing an assessment. Alvarez inquired. Since the entire wall collapsed, no one came to assess the situation.
Hanlon said that special inspections were necessary because of the nature of the work being done. The last one was completed earlier this month, he said.
I would like to know how the city would respond to this. Alvarez stated.
The collapse did not damage anyone else.
