El Paso, TX – A 38-year-old man has been arrested after an apartment fire in El Paso’s Lower Valley tragically claimed the life of a dog. Authorities say the incident is now under investigation as arson.
Apartment Fire Details
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, the El Paso Fire Department responded to a Condition 2 fire at the Marmolejo Apartments, located at 600 N. Carolina. Fire crews worked quickly to contain the blaze, and fortunately, no firefighters were injured. However, one dog did not survive the fire.
Investigation and Arrest
The El Paso Fire Marshal’s Office partnered with the El Paso Police Department’s Mission Valley Regional Command Center for a joint investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of Manuel Cardona, 38.
Charges Filed
Cardona was initially booked on multiple charges, including:
- Assault on a public servant
- Resisting arrest, search, and transport
- Harassment of a public servant
On Friday, Oct. 3, the Fire Marshal’s Office added a more serious charge: arson of habitation (first-degree felony). Cardona was rebooked at the El Paso County Detention Facility, and no bond has been set.
