On June 15, a woman in Texas and her family were out for a walk when they found an abandoned baby. It was the biggest surprise of their lives.
Daniela Fedele told KHOU 11 that she and her family chose to go for a walk on Casa Martin Drive near Bear Creek in Katy that morning.
In the middle of their very hot way home, they saw something on the ground that looked like it was wrapped in a towel.
When I looked back, I saw two little feet moving. My husband was right behind me with the dogs, so I yelled at him. ‘Oh my God, a baby, a baby,'” That’s what Daniela Fedele told KHOU 11. “My husband then yelled, ‘Call 911! Call 911!'” That’s what we did.
Even though she was calling for help, her husband picked up the baby right away.
They were seen running toward a small white fence near an open field, which is where the baby had been left.
They quickly ran to a nearby street and waited for help to come.
Police say that security video shows a thin young male, either Hispanic or White, walking on the footbridge, bending down to drop something, and then running off.
Police said the baby was still connected to its umbilical cord and was wrapped in a blanket.
On June 15, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that when officers went to the 5500 block of Casa Martin, they found a girl who was born before she was due with her umbilical cord still attached and wrapped in a blanket. The baby was taken to the hospital in fair health.
Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Juan Garcia told KHOU that the baby “was freshly born this morning.”
Later that same day, Gonzalez wrote on his blog, “We need your help! We need to know more about the young man Hispanic or White, slim, fair-skinned, with black hair who was holding the towel-wrapped baby. He had on a black shirt and maybe gray pants. The man was walking.
Garcia told the Houston Chronicle that the guy could be charged with child abandonment.
A sheriff’s office official said on Monday that the office is still looking into it.
“Investigators are out canvasing homes to see if any more video of the male seen that day,” he stated.
“When we identify a person the investigation will be reviewed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for any charges,” he stated.
It’s not clear if the baby is still in the hospital or has been taken in by a foster family.
A story from the Houston Chronicle says that parents in Texas can leave unwanted babies at fire stations or hospitals and not be charged with abandonment or neglect as long as the babies are safe and unharmed.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers want anyone who knows anything to call them.
