Louisville, KY – A tragedy struck Louisville on Wednesday morning when 23-year-old Redaja Williams, a mother of two, was shot and killed while walking her 7-year-old daughter to the bus stop. The suspect remains at large, and police are appealing to the public for any information that could help solve the case.
Shooting Occurs at Morning Bus Stop
According to the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. Williams was struck and pronounced dead at the scene after being rushed to a hospital. Several children and bystanders were present at nearby bus stops during the shooting, highlighting the shocking nature of the crime.
Witness Kendra LaRue told WLKY, “Every time I close my eyes, I see her, and I hear her breath. I hear her gasping for air.”
Community and Officials React
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg expressed deep sorrow for Williams’ family during a press conference:
“Heartbroken for the family of the victim today. Heartbroken for the little girl who was holding the victim’s hand. Heartbroken for all of the kids who were at the bus stop. Heartbroken for all of the other families around our entire city that are impacted by this shock and who are now scared.”
Police Chief Paul Humphrey confirmed that a potential suspect had been identified by witnesses but was later cleared of involvement. Authorities continue to search for the alleged gunman, describing him as a young Black man wearing a bright red hoodie and black sweatpants, seen near the scene around the time of the shooting.
Police Seek Public Assistance
The Louisville Metropolitan Police are asking anyone with information to contact their anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD or submit tips through the online anonymous crime tip hotline. Police hope public assistance will lead to the apprehension of the suspect at large.
Williams’ family has also appealed to the community, urging anyone with knowledge of the shooter to come forward to bring justice for the slain mother.
