Philadelphia, PA – Heavy rainfall and flash flood warnings continue to impact the Philadelphia region as the area braces for more dangerous heat later this week.
Flash Flood Concerns as Rain Moves In
As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, moderate rainfall has begun pushing into Chester County, with rain moving along Route 1 in East Nottingham toward Coatesville. The region has already experienced numerous storms, leaving the ground saturated and unable to absorb any more rainfall, which is why the area is under a flash flood watch.
“The ground just cannot handle any more rainfall after all of these recent storms,” said a local meteorologist.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Risk in the Philadelphia Region
By 8 p.m. Wednesday, a storm was dumping substantial amounts of water over Ewing and Trenton, New Jersey, which could lead to ponding on roads and difficult driving conditions. Heavier rain was also reported along Route 29 in Yardley, Pennsylvania, and other parts of the Garden State.
Further storms are pushing into Berks County, increasing the flash flood risk across the region. The First Alert Weather Team has issued a level two risk (on a four-level scale) for flash flooding across the Philadelphia area due to the already saturated grounds.
Looking Ahead to Dangerous Heat and Lightning Strikes
As if the weather weren’t already dangerous enough, lightning struck at an outdoor archery range in Jackson Township, New Jersey on Wednesday evening. Around 7 p.m., lightning hit the Black Knight Bow Benders archery range on Perrineville Road, resulting in one death and several injuries.
“One man died and more than a dozen others were injured after getting struck by lightning,” police said.
The fatality was identified as Robert Montgomery, 61, who succumbed to his injuries after receiving CPR at the scene. Another 14 individuals, including children as young as 7, were injured, ranging from burns to complaints of pain and feeling ill. One person even lost consciousness but later regained it. The victims were part of a Jackson Cub Scout Pack 204 event at the time.
Flash Flood Warning for Bucks County
As of Wednesday night, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, including neighborhoods like Eldridge Park, Trevose, Fairless Hills, and Yardley. This warning will remain in effect until 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Conclusion
With flash flooding already a concern across the region and more dangerous storms expected, residents are urged to stay alert and avoid any unnecessary travel. The weather is expected to calm after the storm system moves through, but dangerous heat is predicted to follow.
