Cyberattacks are everywhere! A recent victim has suffered a data breach from hackers, this time it was the turn of
Lafayette Federal Credit Union
. This situation not only has negative consequences for the company, in this case, but also people who trusted Lafayette Federal Credit Union too. They felt their personal data was sold and they decided to take action and start a class action against the company.
Recently, we have heard some other cases of class actions in the United States, so this might be a sign to focus on these cyberattacks more
. Let’s see what happened to Lafayette Federal Credit Union case.
Do you know what Lafayette Federal Credit Union is?
In case you don’t, Lafayette Federal Credit Union (Lafayette FCU, from now on) is a non-profit financial institution which offers services similar to a bank such as: saving accounts, personal loans, credit cards and financial advice, among others.
Now, it is known for negative news regarding a class action due to a cyberattack.
Cyberattack on Lafayette FCU
February of 2025 was a big date for Lafayette FCU because they were affected by a cyberattack which also prejudiced their consumers. Hackers reached people’s personal data kept in Lafayette FCU’s system, having access to very important data such as names, Social Security number, bank account numbers and other confidential information.
This cyberattack has been a headache for the affected people because their data could be used to commit crimes like identity threat and bank fraud. For example, an affected person experienced an unauthorized transaction from Lafayette and another one said she was receiving spam text messages and calls.
The class action against Lafayette FCU
After the cyberattack, consumers decided to take actions and start a class action against the company in March. Three consumers were the first ones to start this class action and they want to focus on the lack of security on the personally identifiable information.
Can you guess how many people were affected by the cyberattack? A whopping 75,000 people! As you can see, this is not foolishness.
Expectations for the class action
People affected by the cyber attack are claiming this class action to be certified as it is, so that the affected people can be legally represented, not just the three who started it all. Also, they want a jury trial when the time of the trial comes.
Concerning Lafayette FCU, they are asked to pay for damages and the costs of lawyers and the legal process.
We don’t know yet when this will happen nor how this process will end up, but, at least, affected people are making noise to reach as many people as possible.
Why does this case matter?
This class action is very important for future similar cases, so affected people know a bit more about what they should do. Also, it is a clear example that cyberattacks are very present nowadays and companies should take it into account. Companies need to strengthen their security and protect their consumers’ data if they want to keep their trust and not been sued.
We live in a very technological era, so every process will be normally online. This is like giving a dog a bone, hackers will have full access to any system they want and that’s why companies and institutions have to reinforce their security systems.
Apart from companies taking action on their security, citizens should be careful and not give personal data to any website or platform. This will be an obstacle for cyberattacks, if we don’t expose ourselves so much, hackers will have it more difficult to reach us.
