Kentucky Heat Alert: Dangerous Temps Hit 107° Wednesday, July 30 in Louisville

As temperatures continue to climb into the mid-90s and heat index levels continue to surpass 107 degrees by the middle of the afternoon on Wednesday, July 30, dangerous heat continues to suffocate the central region of Kentucky. A Heat Advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) because hot pavement and poor air circulation pose a threat to public health, particularly along heavily traveled corridors such as Interstate 64, Interstate 65, and Interstate 71.

The National Weather Service in Louisville has stated that heat alerts will continue to be issued for the central region of Kentucky and the southern region of Indiana until approximately Wednesday evening. The combination of air temperatures close to 95 degrees Fahrenheit and oppressive humidity will result in dangerously high heat indices between the hours of two and six o’clock each day. There is an increased likelihood of heat exhaustion and stroke, particularly for individuals who do not have access to air conditioning.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, stay away from labor that requires you to be outside during the afternoon rush, and check on your elderly neighbors. Light clothing and moderate physical activity are encouraged.

After three o’clock on Wednesday, there is a thirty percent possibility that isolated thunderstorms may form, which will provide some relief, but in a dispersed manner. There is a possibility that these storms will bring about lightning, gusty winds, and localized drizzle. Rain chances rise further into Thursday.
