The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says that on Thursday evening, an armed juvenile was arrested by the Gang Suppression Unit and SWAT detectives. The juvenile was reportedly on his way to fight with members of a rival gang.
It was claimed that someone stole a car, and GSU detectives were following it, a spokesman for the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Amar Gandhi said in a release. On Thursday, when police tried to stop a suspect car, it sped off to an apartment complex linked to a gang, according to the police. People in the car got out and ran on foot.
Two loaded handguns and two AR-15-style pistols with high-capacity magazines that had not been locked down were found inside the car, and one of the teens was arrested. The person had already been arrested by GSU agents earlier this year on multiple charges of having firearms.
According to the press release, detectives confirmed that the group of gang members was guilty of many recent shootings and murders in the area.
The members of the rival gang were also armed, and the news release says they were “looking forward to the arrival of the armed vehicle, which would have naturally led to a major gunfight among unaware and uninvolved residents.”
Sheriff Jim Cooper of Sacramento County said on X (formerly Twitter) that gang violence was caused by “soft juvenile justice laws that lack accountability for violent crimes.”
“The laws that harm our community by supporting violent people and seeing victims as unnecessary” were the words of the speaker.
Cooper said, “This laxity gives gang members confidence and sends the message that breaking the law is kind of okay.” It’s not okay, and I will keep fighting to make sure our community is safe and for people to be held responsible.
