There are now nearly 200 jobs lost in the United States because of a huge company in Ohio moving jobs overseas.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Friday that it is moving 175 jobs to a new Costa Rica in Akron.
The Beacon Journal was told by Goodyear that some employees at its Akron offices will be let go, but the company wouldn’t say how many.
A Goodyear spokesman, on the other hand, said that the layoffs won’t affect any union workers.
As part of its Goodyear Forward plan, the company said in a statement, “We are moving 175 roles supporting our Americas business and corporate functions to a new Goodyear location in Costa Rica, starting in early 2025.”
About 71,000 people are working for Goodyear, and more than 2,500 of them are in Akron. Most of them work at the company’s offices, according to a spokesperson.
In May, Goodyear President Mark Stewart said that the company had cut 135 jobs in the U.S. and Latin America.
The Beacon Journal claimed in March that Goodyear was going to close its plant in Malaysia on June 30, which would put about 550 workers out of work.
Also, in September, Goodyear revealed that it was going to cut about 1,200 jobs in its Europe, Middle East, and Africa sectors.
