Newton, IA – An Iowa mother was arrested after her 1-year-old toddler fell from a second-floor window while she allegedly left her children unsupervised, police say.
Incident Overview
Angelia Varner, 35, faces one count of child neglect after authorities said she left her three young children alone on Aug. 18 at her apartment in Newton, Iowa. Varner was released on personal recognizance following her arrest.
Police stated that the children — ages 23 months, 3 years, and 9 years — were left inside the apartment while Varner stepped outside to the parking lot. She reportedly left the 9-year-old in charge of the younger siblings.
Toddler’s Fall and Injuries
Neighbors witnessed the toddler fall approximately 12 feet from the apartment’s second-floor window. The child suffered abrasions and bruising to the head. Authorities noted that the window screen had a significant tear, which created an opening large enough for a small child to fall through.
Varner allegedly told police she knew the screen was torn and left it open to “cool” the apartment. The apartment manager confirmed that Varner never requested repairs to the window.
Previous Neglect Allegations
According to neighbors, the three children were often observed playing near the open window or unsupervised outdoors, raising concerns about repeated neglect. This incident follows reports that the toddler’s mother left the children unattended on multiple occasions.
Legal Proceedings
Varner was booked into the Jasper County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2. Authorities emphasize that the charge stems from putting the children at substantial risk of injury due to her negligence.
