Heat index readings are expected to reach 104°F on Tuesday, July 29th, so residents in the Houston metro region should prepare for intense summer heat. For those who are working outside or without air conditioning, the midday hours will be especially dangerous. Limiting time spent outside and staying hydrated are among top safety concerns.
The National Weather Service predicts that Tuesday’s high in Houston will be close to 99°F, with a west breeze of around 5 mph with afternoon heat index peaks. Although the sky is still largely sunny, there is a potential of thunderstorms returning as early as Wednesday.
Even though the week’s hottest weather occurs on Tuesday, Houston’s weather changes by Thursday evening, when there is a 30% chance of thunderstorms, which rises to 50% on Friday and Saturday. Travel on I-69 may be impacted by rain, particularly in the afternoon and evening. The humidity is still high, but storms will provide some cooling.
Harris and Fort Bend county residents should keep an eye on the weather as it changes, particularly if they have outdoor events planned for this weekend. During possible downpours, secure outside equipment and be ready for power outages.
Early August will see more active weather, with sporadic showers predicted on Sunday. The threat of storms persists into next week, even though highs cool slightly into the low 90s.
