Holyoke, MA – In a significant crackdown on open-air drug dealing, the Holyoke Police Department arrested two suspects after a drug bust behind Gramp’s Park on Tuesday. The operation resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, cocaine, a firearm with defaced serial numbers, and drug paraphernalia, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of dangerous narcotics in public spaces.
Focused Investigation Leads to Major Bust
For weeks, the Holyoke Police Narcotics/Vice Unit has targeted open-air drug activity in parks and alleyways across the city. On Tuesday, detectives, alongside agents from the Springfield DEA, responded to a report of suspected drug dealing in the alleyway behind Gramp’s Park, located between Elm and Walnut Streets. Officers found four suspects in the area along with various drug paraphernalia.
One individual, later identified as 44-year-old Angel Rivera of Holyoke, attempted to walk away while concealing something in his waistband. After detaining Rivera, officers discovered a firearm with six rounds of ammunition and a defaced serial number. Alongside the weapon, they seized 15 vials of suspected crack cocaine and 16 vials of suspected heroin/fentanyl, underlining the serious nature of the charges.
Arrests and Charges
Another suspect identified as 39-year-old Anthony Demaio of Holyoke was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant and was also taken into custody. The remaining two individuals were released. Rivera faces multiple felony charges including possession and distribution of controlled substances and firearm-related offenses. His charges include:
- Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
- Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
- Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number during the Commission of a Felony
- Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug
- Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
- Possession of a Class A Drug
- Possession of a Class B Drug
Demaio’s charges currently relate to the outstanding arrest warrant.
