HILO, Hawaii – Powerful swells generated by Hurricane Kiko are expected to impact the east-facing shores of the Big Island through Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued warnings about life-threatening surf and dangerous rip currents, urging caution among residents and visitors. Coastal roads, including the Hilo Bayfront Highway, face hazardous conditions, and unnecessary travel near the shoreline is strongly discouraged.
Although the hurricane itself will pass north of the Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday without a direct hit, experts warn that the associated swells will peak midweek, bringing significant risk to swimmers, boaters, and beachgoers in the area.
Life-Threatening Surf and Rip Currents Endanger East Shores
According to meteorologists, the swells linked to Hurricane Kiko will drive elevated surf levels along the island’s east coast. Strong rip currents present a serious danger, capable of overwhelming even seasoned swimmers.

The wet weather is expected to create slick roadways along Highway 11 and local streets, particularly during morning and evening commutes.
Nighttime showers will continue to keep roads damp and visibility reduced through the week. Emergency personnel recommend extra caution while driving and suggest that travelers charge all devices and remain alert to ongoing weather updates.

While the threat from dangerous surf is expected to diminish after Wednesday, Hilo and nearby communities will experience continued unsettled weather into Thursday and Friday. Showers will persist daily, causing damp conditions and light east winds.
