Maui, HI – A Hawaii man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his wife’s lover, 53-year-old Sione Paletua, on July 20, 2024. The case, which shocked the Maui community, concluded after 47-year-old Seniola Kafoa was convicted of manslaughter in May.
Incident Occurred on Maui in July 2024
According to KGMB News, police responded to the scene after receiving reports of a man injured in a violent attack. Officers were directed by Kafoa to the victim, Paletua, who was unconscious and suffering a severe arm injury.
Paramedics applied a tourniquet and rushed Paletua to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Witnesses reportedly saw Kafoa standing over the victim before fleeing in a Honda, which was later abandoned. Kafoa was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Conviction and Sentence
Prosecutors initially pursued a murder charge, but the jury convicted Kafoa of the lesser manslaughter charge, prompting mixed reactions from Paletua’s family.
Prosecutor Frank Loyd told the court, “Sentencing him to prison, Your Honor, is the only appropriate sentence in this case. It will send a message not only to the defendant, but to the people of Maui that you don’t get a pass to kill someone because your wife was cheating.”
Circuit Judge Peter Cahill imposed the maximum prison sentence allowed under the law, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
Family Reacts to Tragedy
Paletua’s oldest daughter expressed heartbreak over the loss of her father, who was a father of seven.
“One day he will have to meet his maker, the man above, and he will have to answer to him on why he did what he did,” she said, describing the emotional toll on the family, who had already lost their mother to cancer in 2011.
Kafoa apologized to the family through a Tongan interpreter during sentencing, but the grief remains profound.
Community and Court Statements
Judge Cahill commented on the gravity of the case:
“It is a horrific death under circumstances that sadly occurred, but the bottom line is, it did happen, and we can’t ignore it.”
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of violent acts, even when motivated by personal disputes.
