Are you a frequent Kroger Co. customer? If this is your case, I’m afraid to tell you the company is going to disappear from some U.S. states which will impact thousands of consumers and their employees too. The Company will close 60 stores nationwide, which is surprising having in mind this is one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States. Texas will be the first state where this decision will become a reality, and it will be followed by other states such as Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
The interim CEO Ron Sargent explained, this is a strategy to improve the situation in underperforming areas, which is
a common reason when supermarkets announce their closures
. So, let’s see more in detail where these closures are affecting and if you are near any of the disappearing stores.
Closures are not immediately
Don’t worry, the stores will disappear, but not rigth away. You will have time to find your new favorite supermarket because
Kroger
stores closures will be phased in over the next 18 months and will affect several regions. However, Texas citizens… you will be the first in experiencing this change. Although Kroger has not published a complete list of the stores that will close, we can assure one store located in the state of Texas has already been confirmed to be closed. It is the branch located at: 1707 W. University Dr., McKinney, about30 miles from Dallas.
Why is Kroger Co. closing?
According to interim CEO Ron Sargent, the main reason is the low profitability of certain stores. The good thing is that the company has assured that all employees affected by the closures will have the option to be relocated to other nearby stores if they wish. Kroger is closing several stores, so it is good to know many employees will be given the chance to keep their jobs.
Closures: when and where
We have already mentioned Texas will be the first state affected by Kroger’s decision, but there are some others that will experience this closure too. So, let’s have a look at all the states where Kroger supermarkets will disappear:
- Georgia: 2452 Morosgo Way, Atlanta (July 19th); 11877 Douglas Road, Alpharetta (Aug. 16); 3479 Memorial Drive, Decatur (Sept. 13); 3855 Buford Highway, Brookhaven (Oct. 18).
- Illinois: 3311 N. Sterling Ave, Peoria (Aug. 2). Mariano’s (Kroger brand): 450 W Half Day Rd, Buffalo Grove (Aug. 8); 144S Gary Ave, Bloomingdale (Aug. 15); 2323 Capital Dr., Northbrook (Aug. 22).
- Indiana: 4526 W. Western Ave., South Bend (Aug.); 901 Johnson St., Elkhart (Aug.). Jay C (another Kroger brand): 201 High St., Shoals (Aug.).

- Virginia: 1904 Emmett Street, Charlottesville(Aug.22); 466 South Cummings Street, Abingdon (Sept. 19).

Let’s talk about numbers
At the beginning of the fiscal year, Kroger had 2,731 stores across the United States. Therefore, the closure of these 60 branches represents approximately 2% of its total operating network. Although it is not very remarkable when it comes to Kroger’s financial situation, it will make an impact on local communities we already mentioned. It’s sad when your favorite supermarket disappears, because you are used to certain products and you already know the supermarket. Hopefully, today we have a huge range of companies offering many products. So, we’ll see if this decision will be a positive transformation for the chain, its workers and millions of clients who go to Kroger around the U.S.
