Apple is doing it again, and now it has come to shake things up and they’ve introduced a new tool that could slightly change the way we travel, but don’t worry, you’re going to like it! During its annual WWDC event,
they announced the launch of the Digital ID
, meaning you won’t have to run around the house looking for your passport or Real ID anymore, because thanks to the new iOS 26 operating system (yes, we’re already at 26), you’ll be able to carry it comfortably
without needing the physical document.
The promise is clear: travel without carrying physical documents and go through border checks more quickly and safely. We’ll tell you all about it!
What will Apple’s Digital ID be like?
Well, it will be almost as easy as identifying yourself with Face ID or Touch ID on older iPhone versions, and you’ll have access to your real documentation in seconds without needing to carry it with you.
Of course, Apple has worked with government agencies to ensure that this solution meets international security standards and has guaranteed that all the information will be encrypted and only shared with the user’s consent.
Beyond airports
Although the initial goal is to simplify and ease travel, Apple has also designed its Digital ID for other everyday scenarios. It can be used to rent cars, check in at hotels, or verify your age at physical stores. And once you have your document on your mobile phone, you won’t even need to carry it physically and you’ll be able to use it in most situations where you’re asked to show ID (yes, it’s just as valid and legal, it’s not something Apple made up).
What about privacy?
Of course, privacy is one of the main concerns for citizens, but there’s nothing to worry about. Apple has emphasized that this technology is based on protecting user privacy and that no sensitive data will be shared with anyone.
It’s not just about convenience, but also about control: you decide when and with whom you share your data. Also, all information is end-to-end encrypted, and it will work pretty much like your Apple Wallet, only you will be able to activate it.
Where will it be available first?
Of course, this feature will first be implemented only in the United States, and Apple will collaborate with immigration authorities and selected airports to begin testing it. Once the main trials are completed, it will expand nationwide, and who knows, it might soon be available at airports around the world.
Although there is no exact date for global expansion yet, Apple plans to roll out this technology to other countries in the coming years. Adoption will depend on agreements with governments and airports, but the process is underway.
What do you need to use it?
To use Apple Digital ID you’ll need an iPhone compatible with iOS 26. Once you update the system, you’ll be able to scan your official document and verify your identity through the device’s biometric system.
And that’s it, you’ll be able to show your ID with your iPhone.
The digital future starts here
Digital ID is here to change everything, don’t you think? Keep in mind, even if it becomes available, it doesn’t mean it’s mandatory, if you feel safer carrying your physical documentation, go ahead!
But this change is designed to make traveling easier (especially for those of us who are a bit forgetful…). For now, a new path has opened up, we’ll have to wait and see if the tech industry and governments keep up, or if it all ends up being just an attempt!
