GM (General Motors) is back in the spotlight. Yes, once again, and it’s already… T

his time it has been sued (again, yes, also) by a group of vehicle owners

affected by a defect in their 6.2-liter V8 engines. The lawsuit, filed in Pennsylvania, says that General Motors has not acted as it should have and that the only proposed solution for this mechanical failure forces drivers to use a higher-viscosity motor oil, which reduces fuel efficiency and increases costs… What’s going on with General Motors?

New lawsuit against GM

That’s right, the market does not give a break and neither do class action lawsuits. On May 12, 2025, Thomas McNamara and six other plaintiffs filed

a class action lawsuit against General Motors

in the federal court of Pennsylvania. The complaint alleges that GM’s solution to the engine defect (using thicker oil) increases fuel consumption by 3 to 4%, and of course… that directly affects the drivers’ wallets, who are not at fault for anything!

Two options, neither good

According to the plaintiffs, drivers are forced to choose between risking their engine being destroyed or bearing an extra cost for gasoline. For them, GM’s response is completely insufficient (in fact, it is) and leaves them without a truly safe and affordable option, and without coverage. It seems like General Motors doesn’t care about the bad image this lawsuit could bring.

What’s going on with the V8 engines?

The defect in question affects about 600,000 vehicles in the United States. It’s a flaw that can cause total engine failure. Of course this failure will impact the family budget, but even worse is that it represents a serious risk every time the vehicle is used.

A questionable recall

Although GM had already initiated a recall to try to solve the problem, another group of owners also filed a class action lawsuit that labels this recall as “inadequate.” Do you want to know why? Well, because this lawsuit claims that General Motors already knew about the problem these engines represented and still… didn’t care.

And hold tight, because there’s more. As we mentioned at the beginning, this is not the first class action lawsuit they are facing, because the case Houchim et al. v. General Motors LLC is already active for a similar case.

What happens to drivers?

Let’s see, having to pay more for your car to run… is no small thing. The plaintiffs claim that the additional gasoline costs can add up to $1,000 over the lifetime of the vehicle… and many neither want to nor can take on this huge amount.

What are they seeking with the class action lawsuit?

The plaintiffs are not only asking for financial compensation for the additional costs they have to face, but they also want justice for all the affected owners. Among their demands are damages and legal fees, as well as a jury trial to show the magnitude of the problem.

The lawyers leading the cause

The plaintiffs’ legal team is made up of Scott Alan George and Christopher A. Seeger from Seeger Weiss LLP, as well as Kevin Budner, David Stellings, Katherine McBride and Miranda Litwak from Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP; lawyers with extensive experience in consumer cases who hope to achieve a fair solution for those affected.

A new day in the city is a new problem that General Motors gets involved in. For many consumers, the solutions proposed by the manufacturers are not enough, especially considering that they involve quite a significant additional cost…

The controversy over the defective V8 engines adds to other recent problems of the company, General Motors is not having its best moment…
