Golden Retriever Rescued After Falling Through Icy Pond in Rhode Island, Firefighters Warn “No Ice Is Ever Safe”

Westerly, R.I. — A dramatic rescue unfolded Tuesday morning after a golden retriever fell through thin ice at a local pond, prompting a swift response from area firefighters and renewing warnings about the dangers of winter ice.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. at Little Massachaug Pond in Westerly, when a 5-year-old golden retriever named Phoenix was out on a walk with his owner. According to officials, both the dog and the owner stepped onto the frozen pond, but the ice gave way beneath Phoenix, sending him into the frigid water near the center of the pond.

The owner did not fall through and immediately waited on shore while emergency crews were called.

Firefighters Race Against Time

Firefighters from the Watch Hill and Westerly fire departments arrived quickly and suited up in specialized ice-rescue gear. Video from the scene shows one rescuer entering the water and swimming toward Phoenix, who was visibly struggling to stay afloat in the icy conditions.

As the rescuer approached, Phoenix paddled toward him. The firefighter grabbed hold of the dog, and both were carefully pulled back to shore by crews working together from the edge of the pond.

“Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore and were all doing well when on scene,” the Misquamicut Fire Department said in a statement shared on Facebook.

Aftermath and Safety Concerns

Following the rescue, firefighters were evaluated for possible hypothermia as a precaution. No injuries were reported among the rescuers, and officials said it remains unclear whether Phoenix suffered any injuries during the incident.

Fire officials praised the teamwork involved in the rescue, emphasizing the importance of training and coordination in cold-water emergencies.

“All of the Chiefs from MFD and WHFD extend kudos to everyone involved for their quick response and teamwork this morning,” the department said.

The incident marked the first ice rescue of the year for the department.

Warning: Ice Is Never Safe

Fire officials used the rescue as a reminder to residents that frozen ponds and lakes can be unpredictable, especially during fluctuating winter temperatures.

“No ice is ever safe,” the department warned, urging people to stay off frozen bodies of water and keep pets on a leash near ponds, lakes, and marshes during winter months.

Westerly sits near the Connecticut border, about 45 miles southwest of Providence and roughly 100 miles from Boston. With winter conditions continuing across southern New England, officials say similar rescues can be avoided by exercising caution and respecting the dangers of ice.

Thanks to a fast response and coordinated effort, Phoenix now has a second chance — and officials hope the rescue serves as a life-saving reminder for others.
