George Lucas finally comes to Comic-Con to give a preview of his new museum

At last, SAN DIEGO will take the stage. is certain to garner attention, but the 81-year-old is attending the San Diego pop cultural extravaganza for a more grounded purpose: a sneak peek of his long-planned Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

The Sunday panel discussion in Comic-Con’s renowned Hall H will serve as a very subdued finale to the four-day event, which included its customary array of large-scale, spectacular glimpses into future science fiction and superhero productions.

A more comprehensive discussion of the new institution’s focus—the histories and practices of narrative art throughout time and cultures—is also intended to be part of the museum-centered event.

Guillermo Del Toro, a fellow filmmaker, and Doug Chiang, an art director who has worked on a consistent string of Star Wars films since the Lucas-directed prequels in 1999, will join Lucas. The moderator will be Queen Latifah.

Lucas is undoubtedly one of the most influential people whose work has influenced the popular culture and movies that are honored every year in Hall H at Comic-Con.

However, when he was directing his own blockbuster films, the convention wasn’t a typical showcase. In 2012, he sold Lucasfilm and Star Wars to the Walt Disney Co., and Disney has since used various locations to give dazzling presentations on its franchises.

Next year, the museum, which was established by Lucas and his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, will open in Exposition Park, close to the University of Southern California, the Los Angeles Coliseum, and a number of other museums in the city.

Architect Ma Yansong created the 300,000-square-foot, 11-acre site, which houses two theaters, galleries, and other related facilities.
