Friends grieve family of 4 who died Christmas Day after apparent carbon monoxide leak

WCVB, Newton, Mass. On Christmas Day, four adults were discovered dead inside a vacation house in New Hampshire.

Their apparent exposure to carbon monoxide is thought to have caused their deaths.

The Massachusetts couple and their two grown children are being remembered by loved ones.

Mia Cohen, a family friend, described the entire situation as an unbelievable tragedy. Because it’s so awful, it almost seems cruel to look for the bright side.

The narrative is hard to understand.

52-year-old Matt Goldstein, his 54-year-old wife Lyla Goldstein, and their daughters Valerie and Violet Goldstein have been identified as the family members who perished on Christmas Day from what appears to have been a carbon monoxide exposure inside their New Hampshire holiday home.

You know, you can’t make this kind of thing up. According to Jesse King, today is supposed to be her birthday, just like the rest of the family. It resembles something from a motion picture.

King is a family friend as well.

Friends gave Valerie Goldstein flowers in front of the family house as a birthday present.

Keren Kohane recalled that the four fatalities were all very close.

The sisters were particularly close, according to friends, and this year they even got matching tattoos on their arms.

Matt Goldstein was a Brookline school teacher and a longtime Newton resident. Lyla Goldstein worked at Microsoft as a project manager. Violet Goldstein attended the Rhode Island School of Design and was 19 years old. Valerie Goldstein, a 22-year-old North Carolina fifth-grade teacher, became a teacher after her father.

They were also incredibly tolerant. Kohane continued, “They were always so friendly and welcoming.” We’d host karaoke events. Because we had karaoke and her dad occasionally came down to sing with us, she was one of the people I really kept in touch with during COVID. In addition, Valerie and I shared a bond because we are both half Jewish and half Chinese.

According to investigators, the house lacked carbon monoxide detectors. They are still investigating the cause.
