Four people were killed Friday when an SUV crashed into a nail salon on Long Island. The Suffolk County Police Department gave their names.
This weekend, four people were killed in Queens: Jiancai Chen, 37, of Bayside; Emilia Rennhack, 30, of Deer Park; Yan Xu, 41, of Flushing; and Meizi Zhang, 50, of Flushing. The Suffolk County Police Department said this in a statement on Saturday.
Nine people were hurt in the crash, including a girl aged 12.
Police say an SUV crashed through the front window of Hawaii Nail & Spa on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park, where customers and staff were.
In this accident, Rennhack was one of the victims. She was a New York City police officer who was not on duty and getting her nails done.
She worked as a police officer in Queens at the 102nd Precinct. A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said on Saturday that she had died.
The NYC Police Benevolent Association said that the death of Rennhack had broken their “hearts.”
In a Facebook post, the group asked people to pray with them for her family, friends, and coworkers.
The four people who were killed died at the scene. Nine others were hurt. Their ages ranged from 12 to 58.
Five people had already been to hospitals, and four are still there getting care for major but not life-threatening injuries.
Steven Schwally, the driver, was nabbed on suspicion of driving while drunk. The department said Saturday that he is still in the hospital and will be tried at a later date.
Police say he was driving a Chevrolet Traverse southbound at high speed through a parking lot when he crossed over Grand Boulevard and kept going through the nail salon’s parking lot before smashing through the window.
