Minnehaha, Iowa — A fourth person has died from injuries they got in a mass shooting in Minneapolis at the end of May. The shooting also killed a police officer.
Several gunshot wounds to Mohamed Aden, 36, of Columbia Heights, caused him to die on Friday, according to a news report from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday.
Police say that Mustafa Mohamed, 35, shot two people inside an apartment. One of them was Aden. He was 32 years old and died in his room.
Officer Jamal Mitchell was the first person to arrive at the scene of the shooting and talk to Mohamed outside of the flat. When Mitchell asked Mohamed if he was hurt, Mohamed pulled out a gun and shot Mitchell several times in what police are calling a trap.
When another officer came, they started shooting at Mohamed, who then died from his wounds. The second cop was hurt, but his injuries are not life-threatening. Someone else, who is thought to have been a bystander, was shot and is in serious condition at the hospital. A responding fireman was also hurt slightly.
A service to remember Mitchell will be held at Maple Grove Senior High School in Maple Grove, Minnesota, on Tuesday morning.
The police haven’t said what happened before the killing or made any guesses about why the shooter did what they did.
