FORT PIERCE, FL – A 60-year-old woman from Fort Pierce, Bonnie J. Tietgens, is behind bars after allegedly beating her husband to death with a billy club and then attempting to cover up the crime. The incident, which occurred on Birch Drive, has shocked the local community and led to Tietgens being charged with second-degree murder and obstructing justice.
The Fatal Attack
The tragedy occurred late Wednesday night at the Tietgens’ home, located in the Treasure Coast area of Florida. Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 10:30 p.m. after receiving reports about a possible deceased male inside the residence.
Upon arrival, officers found 64-year-old William Tietgens dead from severe head trauma. Investigators determined that earlier in the evening, Bonnie Tietgens had attempted to reach her adult son, and when he returned her call, she reportedly said, “Dad was dead,” and admitted to striking him with a wooden billy club to the head.
Attempted Cover-Up and Discovery of Evidence
As deputies worked to assess the situation and perform life-saving measures, it became clear that the victim’s injuries were fatal. However, the most shocking part of the investigation came when Tietgens was found in the garage near a washing machine.
According to Sheriff Richard Del Toro, authorities found a blood-soaked blanket on the ground near the washing machine, which was fully loaded. Tietgens was allegedly attempting to destroy evidence, as the machine contained blood-soaked clothing and towels. This discovery pointed to an attempt to conceal the crime.
Neighbor Reactions and Background
News of the brutal killing left many in the community shocked, as neighbors recalled seeing the couple from time to time. One neighbor noted that William Tietgens would often walk his golden retriever and greet people with a simple “Hi” or “Good morning.”
However, another neighbor revealed that the couple had a history of fighting and drinking. “It was just a common occurrence for years,” the neighbor said, shedding light on the couple’s troubled relationship.
Ongoing Investigation
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released a motive for the killing, but authorities are continuing their homicide investigation. Tietgens is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail on $250,000 bond and is also under a mental health hold as part of Florida’s legal requirements.
While details of the crime remain limited, the community remains stunned by the shocking violence.
