Miami, FL – A 24-year-old Florida man is in custody after a drunken hit-and-run crash left a woman dead and others injured, following a string of collisions the same night, police report.
Series of Collisions Before Fatal Crash
According to Miami-Dade police, Oscar Andres Portillo Lopez was driving a Honda Accord on the night of September 18 when he rear-ended a Chevrolet Colorado. The driver of the Colorado reported seeing Portillo Lopez swerving at high speed from left to right before the collision. Shockingly, after hitting the Colorado, he backed up and struck the vehicle a second time.
“He looked over toward her and smiled in a sarcastic manner,” the Colorado driver said, describing Portillo Lopez’s behaviour after the first crash.
Portillo Lopez then fled the scene, running multiple red lights. Police say he continued driving recklessly until he slammed into a Jeep Compass driven by 35-year-old Cinthia Liliana Sierra Linares, causing the Compass to hit a traffic pole. The Accord finally crashed into a traffic sign and wall, bringing his spree to an end.
Victim and Injuries
Cinthia Liliana Sierra Linares, a Colombian immigrant and described as a “dear friend” on GoFundMe, was pronounced dead at the scene.
- The Colorado driver sustained a fractured tooth and bruising.
- Her passenger reportedly suffered a hand injury.
Eyewitnesses said that after the final crash, Portillo Lopez exited his vehicle laughing and shouting in Spanish, asking:
“What’s the problem?”
Arrest and Charges
Authorities reported that Portillo Lopez smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words when apprehended. He received treatment for a broken wrist before being booked into Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation, where he is being held without bond.
He faces multiple charges:
- Vehicular homicide in a reckless manner
- Two counts of leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury
Police are awaiting toxicology results to determine the level of alcohol in his system.
Court Proceedings
During a court appearance on Monday, a judge ruled that Portillo Lopez will remain in custody until trial. His arraignment is scheduled for October 10.
Community Reaction and Safety Reminder
The tragic death of Linares has prompted community members to call for stricter enforcement against drunk and reckless driving. Officials remind drivers:
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Always stop at the scene of a crash
- Take caution on roads, especially in residential areas
Conclusion
The deadly hit-and-run in Miami highlights the dangers of reckless driving while intoxicated. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, report unsafe driving, and follow traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
