Flood Watch Issued for Coastal Virginia: Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Risk Thursday Afternoon to Friday

Virginia Beach, VA – A Flood Watch has been issued for coastal Virginia starting at 2 p.m. Thursday, as heavy rain moves into the region. The heaviest rainfall is expected to hit late Thursday night into early Friday, with some areas experiencing up to 2–4 inches of rain. This increase in rainfall could cause flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems.

Rainfall Expected to Impact Virginia Beach and Surrounding Areas

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the Flood Watch extends across much of southeast Virginia and parts of northeast North Carolina. The warning includes areas like Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Suffolk, and Chesapeake. The Elizabeth River and popular routes like Interstate 64 could face street and creek flooding due to the rainfall, which is expected to intensify overnight.

The service notes that rainfall rates could overwhelm streets quickly, and low-lying neighborhoods should be prepared for potential flooding. Drivers should anticipate water-covered roads throughout the Thursday evening commute and into the early hours of Friday.

Prepare for Heavy Downpours, Lightning, and Flooding

Those in flood-prone neighborhoods are urged to secure property and be ready to seek higher ground if conditions worsen. Outdoor activities Thursday night may be impacted by heavy downpours and lightning.

Though the rain is expected to taper by Friday, lingering showers could still cause ponding on roads, especially in areas where the drainage systems are already overwhelmed.
